THE DRILL WORKS WONDERFUL. IT CAN OPEN HOLES IN THE WALL QUITE EASILY. THE ONLY BAD THING I FOUND WAS THAT IT IS A LITTLE HEAVY. IF YOU WANT TO BUY A CORDLESS DRILL I RECOMMEND THIS 100 PERCENT. IT COMES WITH 2 BATTERIES AND THE CHARGER FOR 1 BATTERY. I WOULD LIKE YOU TO BRING 2 CHARGERS
The best hammer drill and impact driver.
for small projects and they work great, battery life is very good.
I use the hammer drill for concrete and it's saved me do much time thanks to the amount of torque and hammer drill settings. The smaller one is great for home use and quick jobs.
All in all these are great drills. 👍
These are awesome, and I love having two drills to stop having to switch from drill to screw.
I still love my "old school" Milwaukee drill, but the new kids have a home in my home repair arsenal
PROS
- Solid
- 4A/H batteries will last a long time between charges - even in high-draw tools like a week-whacker
- Interchangeable batteries between a huge array of tools
- 3 Bright LEDs on driver that stay on for 30 seconds or more after turning off the tool, allowing me to hit the button briefly to light up the work area, then find the screw, then use the tool. Three LEDs right at the collet mean there really are no shadows from my hand.
- Though there is only 1 LED on the drill, it is at an angle that allows me to find the hole marking easily. The drill also has three brightness settings. Don't look at the LED - it will drill a hole through your eye by itself.
- Plenty of power to drive large, long screws into hard wood
- Bag will be nice to carry the tools, and it's big enough I can get several in
- Comes with a handle for heavy drilling tasks such as getting through concrete
- Hammer function on drill makes it easy to get through masonry
- Three variable RPM settings on the drill allow for different material hardness at the correct speed
- Both tools are well balanced and comfortable to use.
- The driver's quick-attach/quick-release feature for bits is really nice.
CONS
- Drill has only 11 torque settings. My old brand had 20 and the greater precision was nice.
- Does not come with the quick-charge battery charger, only the standard one. When your battery is exhausted it's not cool to have to wait 4 hours for your batteries to charge. At the price DeWALT charges for this kit, even on sale, they should be able to provide the fast charger.
BE AWARE OF
- The driver's "Screw" feature (left setting) took some getting used to. It kept stopping on me until I figured it out.
- The batteries can be difficult to release the first few times. Once I got the hang of it though, it is fine.
It's fantastic that now I'm down to a single tools battery type where before I had three. If I make the decision to replace my existing 56v lawn mower with the DeWALT one, I will then eliminate that too and truly have a single interchangeable battery system for all of my battery-powered lawn and woodworking/maintenance tools.
RECOMMENDED
- I also got a set of tool holders and mounted them under a shelf - the type that fit like a battery. With this, I no longer have my tools lying all over my work bench. I also built a cabinet for all my batteries and one charger and now that is better organized too. A neat and organized shop makes for better work.
Drill goes through metal like butter, it’s settings are simple and the light is very handy. I have not used it on cement yet to test the “hammer.”
The Impact driver is very torque-y... a bit much for light screws. It has 3 settings: 1 will screw an average screw into wood, 2 will take that screw through the wood a bit far, 3 will likely strip the screw and send the drill into outer space.... all together it’s new, and has the 20v power you expect from dewalt.
This package is the best price/battery combo available anywhere.
Best part? It’s made in the USA supporting American jobs and economy! (though with foreign components).
After seeing all the 1 star reviews, the first thing I checked was the battery connection terminal (both on the tools and batteries) to see if there was any damage or poor build quality.
They both looked great. (I noticed the bad reviews regarding the batteries were all from around late 2018, so I assume the bad batches from that period have all been sold/returned or recalled long ago.)
So far, everything's ship-shape.
One thing I was curious about (if anyone knows the answer), is the clear grease (I assume Dielectric) on the metal contacts of the battery connection points (both on the tools and batteries).
I was wondering if anyone knows more info about what the specific brand of grease they used was.
I love the screwdriver setting on the impact, and the bright bright 20 minute flashlight setting on the drill. I didn't even know they had those features, they're just bonuses.
I also have the 1/2 impact and love it, and the 20v, 7 1/4 circular saw which is extremely satisfying powerwise.
The impact is fairly light weight, but a little heavy with the 5ah batteries, I'm thinking of getting 2ah batteries for when I'm on a ladder. The 1/2 hammer drill is pretty heavy, but I want that in a heavy duty drill. They seem extremely well made, and when I've had them a while, I'll update my review concerning the longevity.
The Happy:
Power - both the drill and the impact have much more power than my 15 year old predecessors
Battery life/power - The lithium batteries seem to run forever - 4 AH and I haven't been able to find the end
Light - nice to have a light, but this model has the one down by the base, wish it have them around the chuck
Speed options - The 3 speeds combined with the variable trigger really give you control
The hammer feature on the drill - Something I find I need only once a year, but it's nice to have it onboard
Several other features - the push to insert on the impact is nice, the batter "bar" indicator, the fact it came with two 4AH batteries, even the carrying bag, all are nice touches and have noteworthy value
The Unhappy:
Really only one - the weight. These are top heavy even with the 4AH battery on the bottom. I had no idea they would be that way. I presumed with the brushless motor they would be super light.
Conclusion for now:
I got these at a reduced price and feel I got a really good deal. They are well made, as mentioned have a lot of power and useful features. I suspect they will last the rest of my life - TBD of course - LOL! I do recommend them especially if you can find a deal.
After reading some of the other reviews, I was hesitant to get these drills because of complaints about loose batteries, switch problems, and the chuck apparently not tightening down (or whatever). On those things I have comments.
On the loose battery issue... I see that the battery moves around a bit by about a 32nd of an inch. After having the impact drill already with the same battery setup, I never noticed that until it was suggested in the reviews on these drills. I went out to my shop and looked at it, and sure it does that, but it is not noticeable at all (like I said, had it not been suggested, I would not have noticed!). So when I got these drills, they are exactly the same movement; no big deal (not even a small deal).
On the switching issue... I have been a contractor for 20 years building aluminum patio covers, etc. I have used many different brands and sizes of cordless drills over the years. I have never had one that didn't need to be turned on for a second to get the gears to sort of "mesh" (for lack of a better term). Every drill I have ever used, period. When building those patio covers you are running in hundreds of screws a day, and drilling hundreds of holes, every day switching from speed to torque. There is no issue here.
On the chuck issue, I cannot speak for the drill that apparently has an issue, as the chuck that came with these drills has the black, all steel, knurled chuck (vs. the one with the black plastic grip and the shiny chrome looking chuck. I believe those are the ones that get the complaints. Mine works perfectly.
I am no longer a contractor, but (besides building a lot of stuff) I am in the process of converting a 45 foot bus into a motor home. This will be about a 2-3 year project, and I am looking forward to using these new drills. They are nice and heavy, and balanced (even with the extra run sized battery, the drill motor is heavier than the battery, providing good balance). Keep in mind that a heavy drill doesn't kick back as easy as a light one (when the drill bit suddenly gets stuck in the material). Also, I don't know how necessary the "3 speeds" are, but I'm ok with them. I don't want to forget to mention the little LED light that comes on when you drill. I LOVE the 3 brightness levels. The highest one puts me in mind of those high powered flashlights. It is VERY bright, and will come in handy.
I highly recommend these drills. Thank you, Glennman
My DeWalt cordless 18V drill/drivers have always been the tool I use most as a DIY guy. This is my third such item and it is a huge improvement on my last 18V lithium ion. Speed, torque, size, the sureness of the chuck are all dramatically better. The hammer setting my previous unit was kind of useful not a big plus, the hammer performance of the DCD996 is probably the biggest upgrade as I see it so far.
It's not a lot smaller or lighter than my previous drill but enough that I feel and see the difference every time I use it. I've got pretty bad arthritis in my left shoulder an my right shoulder was recently replaced with titanium components. Point being, it's very painful working at or above head level and the reduction in weight has allowed me to get things done with a lot less pain. That's a deal I'll take any day.
The DCF887 impact driver is a beast. It's kind of like a genetic experiment that combined the most aggressive traits of a honey badger, a wolverine and a tasmanian devil.
It's been a while since I'd used an impact driver but I was completely unprepared for the power and speed of the tool. On first use I drove 3 1/2" deck screws through 3/4" pressure treated ply over pressure treated 2x4 so fast it was 1/2" below the surface before I could release the trigger. That was entirely my fault. I had it on top speed and leaned in just as I did with my older drill/driver. The three power settings and the variable speed trigger make it very easy to apply just the right amount of speed and power for any job.
It's size make it easy to maneuver in tight spaces. I utilized it's size and power to handle 80% of the nuts a bolts when I recently did a complete remove and replace of the front suspension of my Honda CR-V, (everything except the knuckle and wheel bearing, which I replaced last year). In combination with my monster DCF899P1 impact wrench(which I really love), the DCF887 made the job dramatically easier. No scraped or smashed knuckles. No straining to get enough torque on a breaker bar. Just pull the trigger and the nut/bold comes off... every time. It helped make the job much quicker and nearly stress free. Bad thing is that the tool was only a month old and already looks live a veteran of many rears in the garage. It cleaned up a little, but avoid accidentally grabbing the wrong rag and getting any brakleen on it. The lettering will come right off. I found that out the hard way.
The two XR 20Volt Max 5 amp hour batteries are fantastic. I've used these tools extensively for 10 to 12 hours in a day and they have never dropped lower than two lights on the three segmented charge meter.
With an adapter they make by old style 18 Volt recip saw run better than ever.
My only gripe about this entire kit is that the batteries don't snap solidly into the tools. There is a good bit of sloppiness and rattle. They have never come loose and for all I know this may be a feature rather than a error. Just something that dampened my enthusiasm a bit.
I see this combo has gone up dramatically in price. Hopefully they will have sales or special buys to bring the price back down.
I was using another Dewalt basic drill I purchased 3 years ago and these are so much easier to use and the power is amazing and only wish I would have purchased these sooner as it would have been easier to finish my home projects with the right tools!
Thanks for the great price and high quality tools!
Now it is still boxed and became useless. I like the Black and Yellow brand and it has a lot popularity in Saudi but have no dealer/Agent????
That is a very sad experience and left with no option!!
Put up a 12' x 14' gazebo on our deck which took four people about 12 hours and did not need to recharge. The impact driver's low speed mode was great for putting in roof panels and not over tightening the screws. The mid level was great for driving all the the longer screws. Drill worked very well. The metal chuck is a plus. Very happy to get something I expect to last much long than a few years.
When either of the drills are on the lowest torque setting, they will give the impression that the battery is not charged. This was something I discovered the hard way when the batteries were fully charged and both drills were at their lowest setting. Without the power, I thought that the batteries needed charge but then they were. long story short, check torque settings when there is no power.
The one thing I do wish: I could turn off the LED lights on the drill and impact that came with it. Its not super annoying but no off switch seems silly. Broad daylight and I have an LED on.
The drill does work fine and has tons of power. However there are times when I feel some sort of grinding or skipping in the gears and to me it seems like dewalt quality is slipping and that is disappointing.
It would have been 5 stars for sure if not for this defect.
When compared to a brushed motor, brushless has more power. Less energy is wasted as friction (heat) since the rotor and stator have an air gap between them. A brushed design has brushes that make contact as the rotor spins. That generates friction, heat, and they eventually wear out and need to be replaced. Brushless motors are more complex and expensive but do away with that, generating more power output at the rotor for the same power input.
In addition, brushless motors tend to be smaller. This means the drill and impact driver are both smaller than my old ones, and this is critical for the drill.
I am a big fan of Irwin Speedbor drill bits - specifically the three-bladed bits with flutes and the screw nose. That pulls the bit through wood, making it quick and easy to drill holes at least until you get to the back edge. Anyway, drilling holes through joists or studs to pull wire where the framing is already fully installed can be difficult or impossible without a right-angle drill: the drill and bit can be wider than the stud/joist cavity (14.5"). However, a 4" Speedbor bit in this drill (shorter because brushless) easily fits in a standard stud cavity with plenty of room to spare. I no longer need to beg borrow or steal a right-angle drill.
The impact driver is an impact driver. Nothing special to report on that, just that it does its job as one would expect. Same with the charger.
I like that this kit comes with a 4AH battery. Many of DeWalt's kits come with wimpy 2AH batteries. Those will not last as long - half as long, to be precise. Better to have the extra longevity to get the job done without swapping batteries in the middle.
This may be more expensive than the non-MAX variety, but it is worth every penny and I regret nothing. Go big or go home!
Update: After a year and a half of use and abuse, these tools are still going strong. They may be nicked up and dinged up, but they just work and work well. Since buying into this battery system I have bought a few other tools and I am even more grateful for the 4AH battery. I use it for the orbital sander and the extra runtime over a smaller battery is nice. I also bought a 6AH battery. Swapping between them when sanding bigger projects works well and I never run out of juice, thanks to the rapid charger in this kit.
As far as I am concerned there are two power tool systems worth buying: DeWalt 20V Max, and Milwaukee Fuel. You spend a little extra money up front, but you also don't need to replace a broken tool a few months later which is actually more expensive in the long run.
The Impact driver and its adjustability is amazing, I would not own a non-adjustable impact driver. On its 2nd setting it will strip the concrete on Tapcon bolts if you are not careful. Very powerful. When working on my cars I rarely bring out the my High Torque 1/2" Impact Wrench, this will break lose most bolts that you will find in a car. Obviously you'll need the big gun for lug nuts, crankshaft bolts, etc.
If you are a pro or a fearless DIYer that tackles any and all projects, it's worth it spending the extra cash on this over lesser kits.
I used the Hammer Drill to drill holes in some thick stucco to mount a heavy water filter on the side of my house. It drilled the holes like butter. I'm sure it would work equally well on concrete or bricks. Highly recommend.
IF THERE WHERE NEW !!!!! This would of been a good deal. Hopefully the rest of the $$400. Of tool I ordered don’t end up being the same way
As far as the stars it is a 5tat tool’s when it is NEW !!!!!
The one stars are because this is not new tool set
In my house hold there are a large number of dewalt tools ranging from drill bits to grass trimmers for yard work, job fan , saws ,tool boxs
The new order showed up yesterday.THIS ONE IS NEW . This one had a zip tie through the case , this one had the hammer drill handle, and the right style batteries.MUCH HAPPIER!!!! That makes this a good deal .
The drill is great. As well balanced as you can get for a 3 speed drill with a chuck like this. The light has 3 settings, so if you actually think you'll need the light, you can turn it up pretty bright. The clutch doesn't let the motor keep spinning while it's slipping, it 'shimmys' the motor for a half second or so (and then stops) when it senses the load to be more than the clutch setting. Reduces mechanical wear and power consumption. The chuck seems to be very well made, and is pretty easy to wrench down on a drillbit with. Metal sleeve too, no plastic. If you want to use it, the handle goes on sturdy. The only thing I don't like about the drill is that the 'safety' is a little flimsy. It doesn't take much to pop it into F/R. Gobs of torque in the low speed, and a fast bit in the highest speed.
The impact driver is great. There are 3 "torque" (speed) settings, and the tool is very well balanced in your hand. The light is radially around the hex chuck, rather than at the foot of the tool, like on the drill. I haven't used it as much but it seems very well made. To my surprise, the 'safety' on this is pretty stout.
Both of these tools seem to be well made, and I actually like the brushless motors. I'll update this review when these have seen their days with regard to longevity or battery life, but I'm looking forward to using them more.
thanks
DEWALT DCK299P2 20V MAX XR Lithium Ion has already been used a couple of times and those who used it were very satisfied. I expect that this drill set will be helping everybody in the family, as we'll keep it on loan for any relative who wants to borrow it...
The Impact Driver is excellent, with a nice degree of torque settings to offer everything between light/delicate assembly use to full on heavy duty use like firmly tightening bolts. Haven't used the drill a ton yet but it's worked for the small jobs I've needed it for and always have the plug in drill if I really needed the extra power. I put an entire 10x8 yard shed together with the impact driver and didn't even put a dent in the battery, literally hundreds of bolts/screws and didn't blink an eye.
Negatives.
Should come with belt clips and bit holders. $300 set come on dewalt. Both chucks. Impact every so often sticks and bit is slightly a pain to get out. Drill driver is sensitive to neutral lock and hand tightening chuck to bit as per instructions. Can overtighten easily and turn gears. (Its just different) Battery mount is a little loose and should be a better fitment. impact 3 speed select. Speed one is just to low in my opinion on the torque not so much speed. But to each his own. 3 speed will torque a pan head kreg hd screw clean through a pressure treated 2x4! Great job dewalt!
I cannot really say if I notice a whole lot different from the 4.0 we had already but the same quality is there and that is what counts. The batteries last a long time, the torque can rip your arm off if you are not paying attention, the charge is pretty quick, the charger also charges the 12V battery of our flashlight and although the light placement is not the best, it is good for a quick guide before drilling.
I have owned Makita, Milwaukee, Dewalt and I believe I had one off brand (do not even remember the name) and Dewalt was by far the best.
I would buy this in an instant again.
